Two documentaries against forgetting.
The Artist & The Man
Based on the concert series Erased Music: Julius Eastman, two documentaries on Julius Eastman will be shown at the Metropolis cinema in Bochum.
Eastman was provocative: with his music, his titles, his attitude and, as a black, openly homosexual man, with who he was. For this he was almost punished with premature oblivion. In recent years, Eastman has been rediscovered.
In A different score, Anaïs Ngbanzo's films the rehearsals for one of the few Eastman concerts that are still organised today. The film provides insights into the artist and his work, repeatedly reinforced by the pianist Devonté Hynes.
Adolfo Doring's Without a Net: The Resurrection of Julius Eastman uses interviews with Eastman's friends and family to paint an accurate picture of the life and work of this almost forgotten artist.
The double feature begins with a conversation with Christopher Rountree, conductor, composer and director of Wild Up , who performs Eastman's works as part of the Erased Music series.
